Writer’s guidelines

Rustik is interested in working with qualified freelance writers who have expertise in:

  • Horticulture/gardening
  • Small livestock
  • Homesteading/living off the land
  • Cooking, hunting and fishing
  • Do-it-yourself projects

Queries: If you have a story idea, feel free to send us a message. In your query, outline the scope of the story, the resources you plan to use (people, sources, etc.), and why you are uniquely qualified to work on this topic.

Your query should also give us a sense of your writing style. Please don’t send us a finished piece – we’d prefer to see your pitch and work with you to define the specific style and approach that will best suit Rustik readers. Unfortunately we can’t be responsible for unsolicited manuscripts or photos.

As we are a start-up, independently-run publication, we regret that we are not able to offer financial compensation to our contributors just yet. We are hoping that will change in the near future.

Rustik readership: Our readers are young, educated, savvy, and passionate. They are actively engaged citizens who pursue a lifestyle guided by values such as sustainability, self-reliance and a love of the outdoors. Though our readers live in many places, they share an interest in small-scale farming, homesteading or other alternatives to an urban life.

Writing style: We are looking for professionally written stories that are witty, smart and lively. We aim for concise, informative pieces — we are not the New Yorker! Email us if you’d like more guidance in this area.

As a general rule, we do not publish first-person stories (as in “I did this, I did that”) unless the story demands it for journalistic reasons. But we believe you can write from authority without using the first person.

Topics: We’re open to all your ideas – from raising heritage breed goats to growing plants for medicinal purposes. Tell us what you’re passionate about!

Thank you for your interest in Rustik magazine!
