10 creative uses for leftover wine

wine-bathThe words ‘leftover’ and ‘wine’ don’t often find themselves in the same sentence in our house. But using a bit of imagination, we were able to visualize a scenario where there could be too much wine lying around. Whatever caused it, we thought we’d offer a few suggestions on what to do with the surplus.

  • Drink it: Let’s start with the obvious. If you happen to be stuck with something you don’t enjoy as it is, think about mulling it, making a sangria or mixing up a punch.
  • Cook with it: Red wine sauces go great with meats, poultry, but wine works in dessert too. Don’t believe the myth that you can’t cook with a wine you wouldn’t drink… experts have found once it’s reduced, there’s little discernible difference.
  • Make vinegar: It is easier than you might think: all you really need is time, patience and a good mother.
  • Use it as dye: Give new life to an old shirt, curtains or any natural fabric by dying them in red wine. The intensity of colour will depend on how long you allow it to soak.
  • Wash fruit and veg in it: We can’t vouch for whether or not this actually works, but some scientific evidence suggests that wine can kill certain foodborne pathogens.
  • Add it to the compost heap: Wine will activate the compost’s bacteria and add nitrogen to the pile.
  • Make wine jelly: Wine and cheese go well together, so why not wine jelly and cheese?
  • Try it in dessert: Red wine makes a delicious ice cream or frozen yogurt topper. It is perfect for poaching pears, and this rich chocolate cake definitely looks like a winner.
  • Freeze it: Pour leftover wine into ice cube trays and freeze until the next time you need a dash of wine for a reduction or sauce.
  • Soak in it: The jury is out on whether the benefits to the skin are real and lasting, but pouring a few cups of wine into your bubble bath certainly couldn’t hurt, right?
