RUSTIK

Market Maven with Ashley Marlin

Farmers’ Market Week (3-10 August) is the only event of its kind in Canada. The festivities highlight the wonderful fresh food, artisan products and local crafts available at more than 40 markets province-wide. Rustik Magazine has teamed up with Farmers’ Markets of Nova Scotia to profile some of the vendors and producers that make up Nova Scotia’s vibrant markets.

1) What is your local farmers’ market and what do you most love about it?
I love all three of the markets I manage, each in their own way.

The Lunenburg Farmers’ Market is the oldest market on the South Shore and we’re also proud that it is the largest and only year-round market in the area. But what we are most proud of is the community atmosphere. You can connect with friends over a local coffee and some great music, or chat with local vendors – some new and some that have been coming for 30 years.

The Hubbards Farmers Market is one of the best-kept secrets on the South Shore. I call it a secret because I am always surprised when I meet someone who hasn’t heard of it. It’s the perfect place for a great Saturday morning – the community park and barn provide a great backdrop for 40-plus local vendors, but there’s also an open field, picnic tables, walking/biking trails, gardens, and a sand pit for the kids to enjoy.

The Tantallon Village Farmers’ Market is one of the newest farmers’ markets in the province. What I personally love about it is the relaxed feel and friendliness, not to mention the great selection of local products. The colourful tents catch your eye from the road and then the warm welcome makes you stay. It’s a great addition to our community.

2) Do you have a favourite celebrity chef and what do you like about them?
My favourite celebrity chef is Chef Lynn Crawford. Her commitment to local, seasonal food and what she can do with it is inspiring. I love her show Pitch’n In because it shows the work that goes into producing the food we eat and will hopefully give people new respect for farmers and producers. I would love to have her come to one of the farmers’ markets that I manage and cook with her.

tantallon-FM23) What one ingredient or food would you eat for breakfast, lunch and supper?
This is a tough one, because I like too many foods. I will have to go with strawberries at their prime during the season: pancakes, salads, sauces – there is just so much you can do with them.

4) What three ingredients would you take to a desert island?
Good wine, good cheese, good bread!

5) Is there one ingredient that leaves you puzzled?
I always make an effort to try some of the new produce that comes to the markets, and sometimes the root vegetables stump me. Like celeriac, for example. I try recipes with it but have just not made it work yet for me.
